April Is So Annoying!

Giselle Renarde

‘Hey, boss.’ April smacked Rick on the ass and laughed raucously at his stunned expression. ‘Look at that grin! You got laid last night, didn’t you?’

When Rick just stared at her, dumbfounded, Heather stepped in, scolding. ‘April, mind your manners!’

Heather glared at the little bitch Rick had inexplicably hired without consulting her. What the hell was he thinking? This chick was nuts.

Rick finally spoke up to say, ‘April, you need to be more professional if you want to work here.’

‘So I guess that’s a no, eh?’ April snickered, and already Heather’d had too much of that annoying laugh, like a cross between a high-pitched donkey’s bray and a snoring anteater. They couldn’t possibly keep her on staff. Heather had never taken such an immediate and all-encompassing dislike to anyone. Ever.

Thankfully, April sauntered off to restock the buffet without another word, waggling her hips like a waitress in a 50s diner. Could she not see how much effort Heather had expended to infuse a little class into this brunch restaurant? How obtuse could a person be?

Heather turned to Rick and growled. ‘That girl’s out of control. Already, she’s said to an elderly couple that we should combine the words “brunch” and “restaurant” to call the place a “breastaurant”. Thank God they laughed. Then she told an overweight lady to go easy on the bacon! That didn’t go over so well.’

‘I’m sorry. I didn’t know she’d be like this.’ Rick watched April dump the half-full tray of hash browns in with the scrambled eggs. ‘Christ, she can’t do anything right, can she?’

‘Not that I’ve seen.’ Heather prided herself on her calm nature and pleasant demeanour, but with April around she just couldn’t contain her agitation. ‘I can’t wait tables when I’m putting out fire after fire with the customers, Rick. Your restaurant, your hire, your problem.’

‘I’m sorry,’ he repeated, but she’d forgiven him already. She never could stay mad at Rick – especially not when he raised an eyebrow and said, ‘Hey, do you think I should have told April the truth about this weekend?’

Rick’s grin, though somewhat churlish, was so irresistible Heather wanted to kiss him there and then. But she wouldn’t let herself do it, not at work. They never let on around the restaurant that they were knocking boots after hours – lead server and owner was just too obvious a pairing.

‘Why on earth did you hire her?’ Heather had to ask. ‘She’s not even pretty. I can’t spot one redeeming quality in that train-wreck.’

Rick shrugged. ‘She was a little weird in the interview, but her references were top-notch.’

‘All wanting to see the back of her, I imagine.’ Heather rolled her eyes as April tried to balance a fruit platter on her head and hula dance for a Polynesian family. ‘Put that down this second!’ Heather felt like a kindergarten teacher, and she looked to Rick for help. When he just laughed, she stormed over to set April straight.

The day went downhill from there. Just
